All of the grain grown on the farm is cleaned and either used for seed or sold for food ingredients. When we first started in 1987 we had no facilities for cleaning and it was very difficult to sell organic crops unless they were cleaned. Cleaning is usually done in the winter and takes a fair amount of time, but the screenings make great feed for the livestock. The next year their manure is composted and spread back on the fields. You don’t get paid for the screenings if you ship them off the farm and it costs money for shipping so using them here on our own farm makes good economic as well as ecological sense.
